Painting wood furniture can be a great way to bring life back into a piece of furniture. But sometimes, older paint can look terrible. If you’re thinking of repainting your entire wood furniture, do it properly the first time. Sanding old paint off of wood furniture is not only a waste of money but can be bad for the wood itself. Sanding wood furniture can also leave imperfections in the paint that are impossible to remove later. Here are a few tips on how to paint wood furniture without sanding it down.
If your furniture is painted with milk paint or chalk paint, you can still use the same technique for painting your furniture. Simply use the same type of paint you used to paint your other pieces of furniture. You’ll need to use the same type of paint as you did to paint the other pieces. So for instance, if you used chalk paint to paint the dining table, you can use the same product for the chairs and side tables in the dining room.
The first thing you’ll want to do before painting any wood furniture is to clean the surface of the wood furniture with a cloth and warm water. Cleaning the surface will help you get rid of dirt and dust that can accumulate when you’re painting the furniture. Sanding the wood furniture will also help remove the scratches and imperfections in the paint. Once your surfaces are ready, you can move on to the actual painting process.
For painted furniture with old paint, there are a couple of options. One method of cleaning your furniture involves using products like Mr. Clean Magic Eraser or Simple Green Cleaner. These products can be bought at most home improvement stores. To use these products on your old paint, simply wet the old paint with water and scrub the surfaces with a rag. Be careful not to put too much pressure on the furniture when scrubbing, as you don’t want to chip the paint.
An alternative option of cleaning old furniture without sanding it down is to use water-based products, which are slightly more expensive than Mr. Clean and are available at most home improvement centers. Water-based products are also easy to use, so you won’t have to worry about taking your time applying them. If you choose this option, be sure to test the water-based solution on a small, hidden spot of the painted furniture. Many people opt to spray the wall paint with the water-based solution and then carefully wipe away excess paint with a dry cloth.
However, if you’re attempting to paint wood furniture without sanding it down, you may not be able to remove all of the imperfections. One of the main reasons that we recommend using paint instead of old paint is that paint is not porous like old paint, which means that it can bond with imperfections much easier. This means that you may be able to hide imperfections without having to go through the process of completely refinishing the piece. In addition, because paint wood furniture possesses a much thicker texture than older paints, you may be able to cover up defects without having to remove the whole piece of wood. For example, even if you do not see any flaws in the paint, you can cover up a dark stain on your furniture by painting over it.
If you’d prefer to avoid having to sand down your painted wood furniture, you may wish to consider one of many different types of oil-based or acrylic-based paint that can easily be found at your local home supply store. These types of paint are made specifically for use on wood furniture, and they are not porous. As long as you take care to apply the oil-based paint in the exact same manner that you would if you were using water-based paint, you will find that the resulting product is nearly identical to the result that you would get from using water-based paint. Acrylic-based paints are another option, although they are more translucent and have a much finer texture than the acrylic counterparts.
Because painted furniture is not porous, you will not run into problems with splatters or drips. Although it is unlikely that you will run into problems, it is still possible. It is highly recommended that you place a small drop of vinegar onto the item that you plan on painting as a preventative measure. Vinegar has been proven to help reduce the occurrence of splatters, so it will work in your favor should you decide to repaint your furniture. You may also want to consider adding an inexpensive mat to your furniture to reduce the risk of your spills becoming soaked.
